Listening Exercise
The Truth Will Set You Free is found in John chapter 8, verses 31-47 in the Contemporary English Version (CEV) of the Bible. First, we’ll start with the Listening Exercise. This exercise is the first part of Advanced Lesson 1, or you can do it as an individual listening exercise.
Before you listen, read through these questions and be prepared to find the answers:
- How can people be set free?
- Why did some people in the text want to kill Jesus?
- Who is the father of the people who did not believe Jesus? How is that different from what they though?
- What is the devil like?
- Who listens to God’s message?

After you have reviewed the questions, click the play button when you are ready to listen. Find the answers to the four questions. Listen to the intonation and rhythm of the dialogue, and how emphasis is placed on certain words to enhance the meaning of what is said. Did you hear peculiar pronunciations, like the incomplete pronunciation of the “t” at the end of the word “can’t?” Don’t worry if you don’t understand everything! Do your best.
