Let’s look at 8 vocabulary words from The Truth Will Set You Free, found in John 8:31-47. This exercise is the third part of Advanced Lesson 1, or you can do it as an individual vocabulary exercise.

Listening Tip:
Some of these words start with a short “i” sound (ɪ) in the first syllable when pronounced correctly (disciple, remain, refuse, belong). Sometimes, when these words are spoken quickly, the short “i” sound will become a “schwa” (ə) sound. Click here to review this very common sound.
1. disciple (noun)
a student or believer of a certain teacher or teaching; in Christianity, a dedicated follower of Jesus – dɪ ˈsaɪ pəl
- According to the Gospels, there were twelve disciples who followed Jesus during his life.
- The faithful disciples carefully wrote down everything the teacher said.

2. slave (noun)
a person who is owned by someone else and is forced to work without payment or a person who is completely dependent on someone or something – sleɪv
- The government should not treat its citizens like slaves.
- Younger generations are slaves to their smart phones.

3. remain (verb)
stay the same, continue to be/exist – rɪ ˈmeɪn
- After the flood, nothing remained the way it was.
- I did not agree with the statement, but I remained quiet.

4. accuse (verb)
to say that someone has done something wrong or illegal – ək ˈjuz
- The generous person was wrongly accused of hate crime.
- The neighbor accused the man of stealing from her.

5. can’t stand [to do something] (verb)
to say that someone dislikes something so much that they don’t want to see it
happen – kænt stænd
- There is nothing good on TV anymore. I can’t stand to watch it.
- The disciples couldn’t stand to see Jesus leave.

6. refuse (verb)
to say that you will not do or accept something – rɪ ˈfjuz
- The chef is a vegetarian; he refuses to cook or consume any animal products.
- Our friends invited us for dinner, and we accepted. It seemed impolite to refuse their invitation.

7. murderer (noun)
a killer, a person who commits murder – ˈmr dər ər
- (1) The police finally caught and arrested the murderer last night.
- (2) The murderer refused to answer any questions.

8. belong [to something or someone] (verb)
to be in the right place, to be part of a group – bɪ ˈlɔŋ
- The students belong to the well-known organization on campus.
- If you are a Christian, your heart belongs to God.
