Subject Pronouns
Pronouns are simple, short words that replace nouns. Look at these sentences:
King David often thinks of the heavens God’s hands have made.
God let people rule everything God’s hands have made.
God built a fortress. The fortress makes God’s enemies silent.
These sentences are long and awkward because there are many nouns. You can use pronouns to replace the nouns, so your sentences are easier to say and understand. Use them when your listener already knows who or what you are talking about.
I often think of the heavens your hands have made.
You let us rule everything your hands have made.
You built a fortress. It makes your enemies silent.
We have used pronouns to replace some of the nouns. We still understand the meaning of the sentence.
Subject Pronouns
Some pronouns are used before the verb. These are called subject pronouns. In this lesson, we will learn how to use subject pronouns.
The subject pronouns are:
I (always a capital letter)
you (singular)
he (a man)
she (a woman)
it (a thing)
we
you (plural)
they
Here are some examples:
I think
you think
he thinks
she thinks
it thinks
we think
you think
they think
Sample Verses
Here are some sample sentences. Remember, you need to tell your listener who or what you are talking about before you can use a pronoun.
In these sentences, the subject is underlined, and the subject pronoun that refers to it is blue.
