The Short U Sound in Put

The letter u makes many sounds. There are actually two short sounds of the letter u in American English.

For beginners, focus on the short u sound in the words umbrella and up. It is the most common short u sound. This sound is called the short open u, and uses the IPA symbol /ʌ/.

The short u sound you hear in the word put is called the short closed u. It is also called the other u. It uses the IPA symbol /ʊ/. This is the short u sound in the words sugar and full. It is also used in some words spelled with oo, like good, foot, and book.

Listen to this audio of the minimal pair put and putt. All the sounds are the same except for the short closed u of put and the short open u of putt. Listen for the difference, then practice the sounds yourself.

(The word putt means a gentle hit of the ball close to the hole, in the game of golf.)
