Let’s look at 8 vocabulary words from the Parable of the Seed and the Sower, found in Luke 8:4-15. This exercise is the third part of Intermediate Lesson 1, or you can do it as an individual vocabulary exercise.

Read the word, study the definition, and listen to how the word is pronounced. Then, listen to how it is used in the sample sentences.

1. multitude (noun)

an extremely large number of things – almost uncountable

The fishermen brought in a multitude of fish today.

Jesus taught the multitude and healed the sick.

2. parable (noun)

a short story that teaches a moral or spiritual lesson

Jesus taught the people with parables.

Many parables help us understand moral issues.

3. sow (verb)

to plant seeds in the ground, or scatter seeds on the ground

The farmer sowed his seed.

Sow rows of marigolds between your vegetables.

4. trample (verb)

to damage something with your feet by stepping on it

The visitors trampled the grass in the lawn.

That dog is trampling my flowers!

5. devour (verb)

to eat all of something quickly, especially because you are very hungry

He devoured half the pizza in two minutes.

The snake devoured the mouse.

6. wither (verb)

to dry up and die, usually a plant

The flowers in my vase have withered.

The hot sun made the grass wither.

7. choke (verb)

to be unable to breathe because of an obstruction in your throat

Very small toys can choke a baby.

The dog choked on a large piece of food.

8. perseverance (noun - made from the verb "persevere")

to continue trying, even if it is difficult

The only way to improve is through perseverance.

Continue to work hard and to persevere, even if it is difficult.
