Pronounce T and D in American English
Now, let’s look at how to pronounce t and d, our last set of stop consonants. These are the most common stop consonants. If you haven’t read the article about stop consonants, please review that before you watch this video.
To make these sounds, you will touch your tongue to the back of your top front teeth. Your teeth and lips will be open just a little bit.
Practice these words with me from John chapter 10.
t – most, tell, enter, what, out, not, must, take, it, feast
d – door, shepherd, said, did, find, destroy, down, good, God, demon
T and D Have the Same Mouth Position
Remember that we study stop consonants in pairs because one is a voiced sound, and one is an unvoiced sound. T uses air, and you should feel a puff of air come out of your mouth when you say t. D uses your voice. You should be able to feel your vocal chords vibrating when you say d.
