Reading in English
It’s easier than you think to learn how to read in English!
To learn a skill well, just start with the basics. If you build a house, you don’t start with the roof, right? First, learn the building blocks of English. Add doors and windows, then you will finally be ready to add the roof.
Tips to Help You Learn to Read in English
- Try to spend 30 minutes each day on focused reading. Turn off all your electronic devices so you can concentrate! Find a quiet, comfortable spot so you won’t be interrupted.
- Read at your level, or a little bit above. Don’t choose a full-length novel if you are still a beginner. You’ll become frustrated, and very discouraged. If you choose reading material for your own level, you will learn a lot. You will continue to have more small successes, and you will want to learn more!
- When you do focused reading, just read! Don’t stop at every new word and run to the dictionary. See if you can understand what you are reading from the context. You can write notes to yourself about things you want to look up when your 30 minutes are finished.
- Did you read it once? Read it again! You will see that you understand more and more each time you read.
- After your focused reading time is finished, gather all your notes and check the dictionary or grammar books to find the answers to your questions.
