In this vocabulary exercise for the story how Saul becomes a follower of the Lord Jesus, we’ll look at 5 vocabulary words and phrases including a new phrasal verb. This exercise is the third part of Advanced Lesson 3, or you can do it as an individual vocabulary exercise.

1. keep on (doing something)

kip ɔn (phrasal verb)

to continue or persist in

Then Laban said, “The Lord has brought you safely here. Come home with me. There’s no need for you to keep on standing outside…  (Genesis 24:31a)

But the people were thirsty and kept on complaining, “Moses, did you bring us out of Egypt just to let us and our families and our animals die of thirst?”  (Exodus 17:3)

2. threaten

ˈθrɛ tən  (verb)

to express intention to do harm; to warn of something unpleasant

The crowd threatened to stone Moses and Aaron to death…
(Numbers 14:10a)

The officials could not find any reason to punish Peter and John. So they threatened them and let them go…  
(Acts 4:21)

3. flash

flæʃ (verb, also a noun)

to give off light suddenly; a brief, sudden burst of bright light

Moses pointed his walking stick toward the sky, and hailstones started falling everywhere. Thunder roared, and lightning flashed back and forth, striking the ground… 
(Exodus 9:23-24a)

Each flash of lightning is one of his arrows striking its target, (Job 36:32)

4. cruel

ˈkruəl (adjective)

causing great pain or distress

After Jacob died, Joseph’s brothers said to each other, “What if Joseph still hates us and wants to get even with us for all the cruel things we did to him?”
(Genesis 50:15)

So obey me, and don’t be cruel to the poor.  (Leviticus 25:43)

5. terrible

ˈtɛr ə bəl (adjective)

extremely bad

This will be the worst time of suffering since the beginning of the world, and nothing this terrible will ever happen again.  (Matthew 24:21)

I promise you that any of the sinful things you say or do can be forgiven, no matter how terrible those things are. (Mark 3:28)
