In our Good Samaritan vocabulary exercise, we’ll look at 6 vocabulary words and phrases. This exercise is the third part of Intermediate Lesson 3, or you can do it as an individual vocabulary exercise.

Read the word, study the definition, and listen to how the word is pronounced. Then, listen to how it is used in the sample sentences.

1. expert

ˈekspɜːrt  (noun)

a person who has mastered a particular subject

Ulam’s sons were brave soldiers who were experts at using a bow and arrows…  (1 Chronicles 8:40)

But the Pharisees and the experts in the Law of Moses refused to obey God and be baptized by John.   (Luke 7:30)

2. eternal

ɪˈtɜːrnl   (adjective)

a short story that teaches a moral or spiritual lesson

Then they will have the hope of eternal life God promised long ago…  
(Titus 1:2)

Our Lord, you are eternal! Your word will last as long as the heavens. 
(Psalms 119:89)

3. grab

ɡræb  (verb)

to take or seize someone or something suddenly

As Samuel turned to go, Saul grabbed the edge of Samuel’s robe… 
(1 Samuel 15:27)

…They grabbed Paul and dragged him out of the temple…  (Acts 21:30)

4. beat up

biːt ʌp  (phrasal verb)

to hit someone or something many times

…But they beat up the servant and sent him away without anything. 
(Luke 20:10)

The prophet found someone else and said, “Hit me!” So this man beat him up.  (1 Kings 20:37)

5. happen to (do something)

ˈhæpən   (phrasal verb)

something that a person experiences, including something unexpected

…he was afraid that something might happen to him.  (Genesis 42:4)

Remember what happened to Lot’s wife.  (Luke 17:32)

6. treat

triːt  (verb)

1. to give medical care to a person or animal

2.  to act toward someone or something in a specific way

You, Lord, will always treat me with kindness.  (Psalms 138:8)

Treat others as you want them to treat you. This is what the Law and the Prophets are all about.  (Matthew 7:12)
