The leaders and teachers of Israel were often left without anything to say as they listened to Jesus teach with heavenly wisdom and simple logic. Let’s learn more about The Wisdom of Jesus, from Matthew 7:1-20. This exercise is the first part of Advanced Lesson 2, or you can do it as an individual listening exercise.

First, be prepared to find the answers to these four questions as you listen:

  1. Why shouldn’t you condemn others?
  2. What happens when you ask, search, and knock?
  3. What is the difference between the narrow gate and the wide gate?
  4. How can you tell who the false prophets are?
  5. List at least three lessons from the verses.

Next, click the play button when you are ready to listen. As you listen, find the answers to the five questions. Listen again and again, and become more familiar with the words each time.

Listen carefully, and you will hear how English intonation usually goes down at the end of a declarative sentence, but up at the end of a question. Notice how small words like “and” and “to” are reduced to “n” and “t” when they are said at normal speed in a sentence. This is called “reducing” words. You can read more about reducing in this post.

Do your best, but don’t worry if you don’t understand everything. You can listen to it again during the Reading exercise.

Now, move on to the Reading Exercise.
